The Town Salekhard is the administrative centre of Yamalo-Nenetz Autonomous Area. It is the only city in the world located at the Polar Circle. Russian Cossacks built Salekhard, former Obdorsk, of logs in 1595. At that time Obdorsk fortress was the most northern and probably the most eastern outpost of Russia on the way of its move to the shores of the Arctic and Pacific Oceans. From that time Salekhard has been the centre of Russian state system in the Far North of Western Siberia. This town at the Polar Circle has a rich and long history. The town was growing and its social, political significance of the town was growing too. The town, which was built of logs over centuries, began “to dress” into stone. All of buildings, blocks-of flats are being constructed only fundamentally. The regional centre has become an international and cultural centre at the north of Eurasia. There is a range of hotels, restaurants and public houses. There are general public schools, lyceums and gymnasiums in the town. Among them is Gymnasium No 1.
